The Devonian Period & Exctinction

The Devonian Period

The Devonian period happened about 419.2 million to 358.9 million years ago.
It's often referred to as the 'Age of Fishes' because of the amount of fish
and their diversity at the time. This period was also important for the evolution
of terrestrial life, with the first land-dwelling plants and arthropods appearing and varying.

The End of the Devonian Period

The reason the Devonian period ended is most likely because of volcanic activity
(One theory for why the volcanoes started erupting is shifting tectonic plates).
The volcanoes emitted so much carbon into the air that it made it almost impossible
to breathe. This mass exctinction led to the annihilation of 70% - 80% of all animal
species on the planet. Yikes!
